Sony will open Aibo software
Sony announced yesterday it will open the specifications of the software powering its robotics pets.
The specs of the "Open-R" architecture, developed by Sony to give "life" to the robots and control their behaviour, will be available online starting on June 3, 2002.
They will come with a Software Development Kit (Open-SDK), that will be available for free, allowing Aibo owners and hackers to add functionalities to the robots, for non-commercial purpose only.
This announcement marks a change in Sony's policy, and a new step in the "Robot OS war" that seems to have started a few weeks ago.
